Not even jazz great Miles Davis could escape the black hole. The decade that saw synthesizers and slick approaches ruin pop music somehow caught the master trumpet player's ear and resulted in one of Davis's poorest periods. Of course, Davis was lucky to even be alive during the '80s, surviving sickness and drug abuse, and this hour-long performance, shot during the 1985 Montreal Jazz Festival, shows a performer looking happy just to be playing. Appearing thin and sickly, Davis and his six-piece fusion outfit run through six tunes, none coming close to the trumpet player's past experimental achievements. Songs like "One Phone Call" are long, metallic funk jams that nonetheless give Davis plenty of room to maneuver in spirited solos, when the rhythm section and keyboards aren't drowning him out. Davis also reinvents pop hits of the era--ballads like Michael Jackson's "Human Nature" (from Thriller) and Cyndi Lauper's "Time After Time," but they come across more like soulless "smooth jazz." Still, on all of the numbers, if you can block out everything else and simply focus in on Davis's trumpet, the aging great possessed the ability to mesmerize, even in his down years. Despite the lack of terrific music material, this DVD is wonderfully packaged. The Milestones Biographical Time Line is a great source to introduce beginners to Davis's legacy, while the extensive liner notes on each individual song performed in Montreal are equally impressive. --Dave McCoy show more miles-davis:... montreal... Leontyne Price in Concert Credit Leontyne Price not only with one of the great soprano voices of the 20th century but with an uncommonly high level of artistic courage. Her career had been going for more than 30 years when she gave this concert on Canadian television (with commentary in French) in 1982. She was 55 years old and only three years away from her Metropolitan Opera retirement--time to pamper the voice a bit, you might think. But this program is free of self-indulgence, generously sampling the repertoire that had made her famous and starting off spectacularly with one of opera's greatest soprano challenges: "Come scoglio" from Mozart's Cosi fan tutte, in a performance that is impressive if not quite flawless. From that point on, her voice gets better and better through selections from Verdi, Gershwin, and Puccini. Charles Dutoit provides expert accompaniment and conducts an orchestral suite from Porgy and Bess. --Joe McLellan show more leontyne-price... concert... Jsus de Montral Denys Arcand again makes a showing on our list with this brilliant film about a Montreal acting troupe re-creating the story of Christ's life and death. Deadly Decisions Temperance Brennan is a forensic anthropologist with one of the longest commutes in fiction--from North Carolina to Montreal. She works in both places, and in this third outing (after Déjà Dead and Death du Jour) she manages to make a riveting (if a bit too coincidental) connection between a skull in Montreal and the partial skeleton of a teenager--dead since 1984--in North Carolina. Linking them is a 9-year-old girl shot on a Montreal street, the victim of a war among members of an outlaw motorcycle gang in eastern Canada. Another piece of the puzzle is provided by Tempe's visiting nephew, who is fascinated by the biker culture and is drawn into the mystery Tempe's trying to solve: "Know anything about Slick?" asked Kit.The science is as accurate as the author can make it. Kathy Reichs's own background--as forensic anthropologist for the chief medical officer of North Carolina and director of forensic anthropology for the province of Quebec--ensures verisimilitude of place and procedure and creates a believable milieu. Fans of Patricia Cornwall will enjoy this solidly written suspense thriller, while those of a less scientific bent, who don't mind a somewhat lagging pace, will skip the details and concentrate on Reichs's fluid writing. All readers will enjoy the way Tempe puts the pieces of the puzzle, as well as the bodies, together. --Jane Adams show more deadly-decisions... decisions... nhl-montreal... nhl... mouse... montreal... in... canadiens... ... nhl... montreal... auctions: Montreal 2008-09 Montreal Centennial FRANK J.
